Efficacy of Intramammary Antibiotics in Clinical Mastitis: A Field Study
Abstract
This study evaluates the clinical and bacteriological cure rates of three common intramammary antibiotic protocols used for the treatment of moderate clinical mastitis in Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle.
Introduction
Clinical mastitis remains one of the most costly diseases in the dairy industry. The standard approach often involves blanket intramammary antibiotic therapy, which contributes to antimicrobial resistance and economic loss due to milk discard.
Materials and Methods
We enrolled 450 lactating Holstein cows presenting with mild to moderate clinical mastitis. Milk samples were cultured on-farm.
Results and Discussion
Our findings showed no significant difference in clinical cure rates between the blanket therapy group and the targeted therapy group. However, the targeted therapy group showed a 40% reduction in antibiotic use.
